Quirky Vision – Meryl Meisler

Life in the Big Apple in the 1970s

Sassy New York photographer, Meryl Meisler is zooming into Gloucester to talk about her quirky vision.  From discos to high school life, Meryl’s work provides us with an insight into life in the Big Apple in the 1970s and 1980s, at at time when the city was on the verge of bankruptcy and the world had written it off.

The evetis timed to coincide with the tenth anniversary of the Portrait(s) Festival in Vichy, where QUIRKYVISION is being exhibited until 4th September. Read more about the exhibition here.

“Meryl Meisler captured the demimonde dancing on the city’s grave and then some.” (James Panero in New York Paradise Lost: Disco Era Bushwick by Meryl Meisler)

About Meryl

Born in the South Bronx, raised in Long Island, and spending decades working in New York’s public schools, Meryl possesses an empathic relationship with the communities she photographed. It was only after her retirement from teaching in 2010 that she began to release her photographic archive – a vast oeuvre which reveals her singular, ‘quirky’ vision.
