PHOTOFAIRS New York
PHOTOFAIRS New York is a new contemporary art fair dedicated to photo-based works, digital art and new media. Taking place at the Javits Center, on Manhattan’s West Side, the Fair features a highly curated selection of exhibitors from around the world.
PHOTOFAIRS New York’s debut edition welcomes exhibitors from more than 20 cities — from renowned photography dealers, to interdisciplinary art galleries, to organisations at the forefront of emerging technologies. In addition to a range of group exhibitions, more than a third of the fair is devoted to solo artist presentations.
Many of this year’s solo presentations spotlight the work of artists examining the craft and materiality of photography and its intersections across media and discipline, from drawing and painting to fibre techniques and collage. Among numerous highlights, Brooklyn-based artist Delphine Diallo’s new series Golden Age combines portraiture and collage to give new life to African cult objects; meanwhile, HESSE FLATOW’s presentation of photographs, prints, and video works by New York-based artist and Contemporary Heroine Adama Delphine Fawundu explores themes of indigenisation and ancestral memory.
New York’s enthusiasm for visual culture is evidenced by its strong gallery scene, with more galleries representing photographers in the city than anywhere else in the world. At PHOTOFAIRS New York, audiences are invited to explore the diverse and rapidly evolving landscape of image-making, with contemporary intersections between digital art and film pushing the boundaries of what photography can be.
Alongside its gallery and solo exhibitions, PHOTOFAIRS New York features a range of large-scale installations, publishing projects, and an annual acquisition prize for exhibiting artists. Aiming to appeal to established collectors and a new, fast-growing, generation of buyers, the Fair is accompanied by an extensive VIP programme.
The inaugural edition of PHOTOFAIRS New York will take place 8th – 10th September, 2023 (VIP Preview Day 7th September, 2023).
