Ownership and Digitisation of a Historical Archive

Hundred Heroines consistently brings the work of historical Heroines to the light, championing their pioneering work and celebrating their roles within the history of photography. We use contemporary sources, archive materials and research to support the discovery of these innovative women.

One of our major projects for Q4 2023 is the ‘Archive Activists’ a volunteer programme to introduce women and girls to the excitement of the detective work involved in sorting out an archive.

In April 2022, the executors of the Buchmeyer-Lewis estate gifted to us the entire archive from Elisabeth’s life and work spanning a time period of 50 years: approximately 3 dozen vegetable boxes containing hundreds of paper, photographs, negatives, ephemera and mixed media artefacts. This bequest has now been accessioned into our collection, and we retain full ownership of it.
