María Magdalena Campos-Pons
Award-winning Cuban artist María Magdalena Campos-Pons works across a variety of mediums, including photography, performance, and sculpture, exploring themes of history, gender and religion in relation to identity.
Her work draws on her Afro-Cuban heritage, incorporating stories of the Trans-Atlantic Slave trade, revolutionary uprisings, and her experience as a Cuban expatriate.
This year, María celebrated women in When We Gather, the project/film pays homage to women who have been instrumental in bringing about change in the United States, leading to the election of the country’s first woman and woman of colour Vice President, Kamala Harris.
In 2021, María was awarded the annual $50,000 Pérez Prize from Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM) and this October María will be featured in our Women on Women exhibition as part of Photo Oxford and we will be screening When We Gather online.
