Gabrielle Eber
A Mother’s Alphabet (2016)
Using the structure of the traditional educational video, this work shifts the narrative voice from conventional child to mother and tells the unsung account of the early days of motherhood. It uses dark humour to shed light on what is often portrayed as an overly romanticised experience for women.

Kendall Kirkwood
baby dyke
Underneath all the chaos of our daily lives, there is a compass whose sole purpose is to direct us where we ought to travel. Whether we listen to it or not, this compass will continue to point out the roads and paths and people along which we should drive and walk and love. baby dyke is a film about interacting with this compass, or inner voice, on a number of different levels. The opening scenes are about realisation, being surprised to hear the voice of your compass speak. The middle scenes are about grappling with the sometimes-difficult truths which can emerge, shift, and change on listening, or being unable to ignore, this inner voice. The final scenes are about acceptance, acknowledging the depth from which this voice rises, and ceasing to fight against the direction it is taking you, no matter how uncertain or frightening it might seem at the time. Ultimately, baby dyke is about decisions. It is about honesty, and trusting yourself enough to follow your truth, wherever it may lead.
