Marysa Dowling will discuss two long term projects,Blue Bag(2007-17) and The Conversation(ongoing), both on show. These projects share concerns that reoccur throughout Dowling’s practice; examining how photographic portraiture can play with and enquire into representations of identity. Dowling’s portraits often become the starting point for a visual exchange between people in different locations.
The Conversationis an evolving project between women in the UK and Mexico, employing portraiture as a catalyst to create conversation and exchanges about women’s lives. Having recently returned from working with women in Mexico, Marysa invites you to join her in making a portrait, adding to The Conversation. You will receive a copy of your portrait at a later date.
Dowling’s practice is embedded within portraiture and concerned with humanity, behaviour, interconnected relationships and communication. Her focus in on building community through shared photographic experiences, participation is key. Dowling often sets simple rules and parameters to encouraging people to explore how they communicate and relate to each other and the places they live. Predominantly her work is an exploration and observation of how people co-exist, relate to and interact with each other, and the various environments they inhabit. Dowling says of her practice, ‘Photography enables me to understand people and the world. My intention is always to create thoughtful and playful photographic works that come into being through social interaction.’
Marysa would like to thank All Change for their support with The Conversation.
