Hebe Barnard (née Saunders)
(1820-1872)
Born in Cheltenham in 1820, Hebe Renard Barnard (née Saunders) began her artistic career with painted miniatures, many of which were exhibited at the Royal Academy. In the 1850s, she took up photography and ran a successful portrait studio in Regent Street, with her husband Philip Augustus Barnard. The post office directories of 1860s show separate entries for the two artists, supporting the view that she was a photographer in her own right and not simply Philip’s assistant.
