Loretta has been Nominated by Geoff Nicholson, one of our #HundredHeroines Ambassadors
If you ask me, anybody who can stay in the game, keep taking photographs, keep producing good and interesting work, is a heroine.
Loretta Ayeroff is an Angelino through and through. She first showed her work in a 1974 group exhibition titled “New Color Work” at “alternative space,” Los Angeles.
Her work is in permanent collections at the J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles, the Palm Springs Art Museum, and the Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC, among others.
The sections on her website have titles such as California Ruins, the Motel Series, Los Angeles, Dedicated to Raymond Chandler, and Road Pictures. These are familiar subjects and yet she makes them her own.
There is a formality and a detachment in her work, and yet (and I admit I’m not sure exactly how she does this) there’s also a profound warmth and humanity.
Teaches photography at LACMA, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
