White Picture
Alison Baskerville is a British documentary photographer based in the UK. A recent fellow with the International Women’s Media Foundation and military veteran she has explored and produced work in Afghanistan, Gaza, Mali and Somaliland. Her first major exhibition was held at the Oxo Gallery in London in 2012.
Alison produced the series the White Picture looking at the role of women in the British Army in Afghanistan. This early work has provided the under lying narrative to her commitment to accurately document the continued role and representation of those who identify as women in the armed forces. As a supporter of a more intersectional approach to gender Alison is now looking at themes of masculinity and hyper masculinity. She is interested in exploring these representations and working to document these themes in an individual and authentic way. Alison is working with artists in her home city of Birmingham to raise conversations around colonial mindsets and the need for a more intersectional society and recently set up the cities first festival for womxn known as P.M.T (Powering the Matriarchy Together). In 2017 Alison collaborated with artists as part of the TEDxSkoll event in Oxford.
Her current work is ‘Soldier’, commissioned by the Impressions Gallery, is an exhibition of never-before-seen images taken by women on the frontline during WWI as well as modern images taken by Alison.
In addition to her photographic work, she has recently set up a movement called ROAAAR to deliver safety training and advice to female photographers in the field.
Alison teaches, through workshops, the art of producing documentary stories and the ethics of taking and using documentary photographs.
Apart from what she does as a photographer Alison provides strong support and collaboration to other women photographers and artists.
