We’ve been overwhelmed by the response to our campaign Hundred Heroines: Celebrating Women in Photography Today and big thanks to everyone who has nominated a heroine, helped spread the word or joined our ambassadorial team; and extra special thanks to all those helping out behind the scenes.
With nearly 500 heroines having been nominated, we have been overcome with emotion as we’ve been reading the stories; there is no doubt that all of our nominated photographers have done something heroinic. Risking their lives to bring back images from war zones, standing up for women’s rights in countries where women are deemed second-class citizens, encouraging wayward teenagers to pick up a camera, coping with terminal illness, highlighting communities that have been marginalised, using photography to promote a campaign, working for charities in hostile environments … the list of selfless deeds is astounding. From next week, we’ll be sharing some of these stories.
We have been particularly moved by the generous way in which women are supporting and empowering each other through the campaign. And we’re not ignoring the men – they have been super supportive through their nominations; the admiration for their heroines shines through.
In a world of fake news, bad news, alarming news and uncertainty, the photographic community should feel proud of having so many heroinic (and heroic) members.
