Exhibition
By Hinda Schuman
Hinda’s work portrays these women as fully whole, fully there, with all their attendant joys and sorrows, transcending the commonplace, the frightening realities of their situations. In her hands, they become both human and humane.
“I’m not going back to that life.”
In her work, we meet these women as they come face to face with the realities of their life outside of prison, back in their communities, trying to reestablish their connections and their lives. Above all, the work acknowledges that time does not simply restart at the prison gate; it stretches, loops and rewrites itself as the women negotiate past experiences and future hopes.
Shown in dialogue with Halfway Home, Hinda’s companion series, the exhibition expands our understanding of what “coming home” really looks like. Together, the works underscore a simple but urgent truth: release is not the end of the story. These photographs offer a rare and essential visibility to women whose journeys are too often overlooked, inviting us to understand re-entry not as an event but as an ongoing, human process.
