“My images are intimate, about issues and citizens I deeply care about. I believe photographs may not be capable of doing the moral work for us, but they can trigger the process of social consciousness.”
For those who might not know, Carol Allen Storey is a documentary photographer who tells visual stories about complex social issues around the globe. Storey has published photo books to aid charities as well as creating work featuring in exhibitions at the National Portrait Gallery and a solo show at Association of Photographers Gallery with her project ‘Anything is Possible’.
She gives a voice to the people she photographs by choosing to shine a light on lesser-known crises’ happening around the world, behind closed doors. Her photographs reflect the sensitive nature of these narratives through her innate ability to talk to and communicate with potentially vulnerable people and make them comfortable enough to share their stories, whether that be homeless nurses or teens that are living with AIDS.
Her combination of using prominent environments and the relationship with her subjects gives a powerful story an even more powerful visual, which in my eyes is what makes her imagery so successful. Storey allows you to feel the connection she has built with people and their stories; you can learn about them through their eyes, their posture, the environment in which they’re photographed, giving an accurate representation of the lives these people live and the struggles they’ve faced with great strength.
She has worked with an abundance of charities such as Save the Children, Unicef and WWF to name a few, and continues to strive to make change using her work as a platform for these topics to stand on. Storey creates work to not only shine light on these topics but to create a conversation around them to ensure that they don’t get left behind and forgotten about. The work she does is essential within the photographic industry because it encourages conversations that need to be had and that is why I believe she is a heroine.
