The Great Train Tapestry: Phase II

By 7th November 2023April 21st, 2024No Comments

Phase II of our Great Train Tapestry* is underway!

Following our series of workshops led by international artist Lisl Ponger, we have now progressed to the making stage of this tapestry. For an opportunity to contribute your own stories and ideas to a contemporary artwork which will be exhibited in 2024, come and join us for our upcoming open access sessions!

Within weekly sessions, you will have the chance to contribute to the making of textile-based panels which showcase narratives surrounding the Great Western Railway and its connections to Gloucester. The final tapestry will comprise over 70 panels which explore themes including transport and travel, textile industries, borders, labour, and the often-overlooked role of women in the rail industry.

A variety of materials and equipment will be on offer—including the opportunity to work with embroidery, sublimation print, batik, and appliqué—depending which media sparks your interest! Canon equipment and a scanner bed will be available should you wish to create your own original compositions, and an image bank collected from visits to the Steam Museum can also be used as inspiration or a basis for what you create.

Upcoming Workshops

Sessions will run weekly until 4th December, at the Hundred Heroines Museum (Eastgate Centre, Gloucester, GL1 1AG on the first floor).

Specific dates and times for each session are as follows:

  • Friday 10th November, 13:00-15:00
  • Sunday 19th November, 13:00-15:00
  • Friday 24th November, 13:00-15:00
  • Sunday 4th December, 13:00-15:00

The sessions are open to women and non-binary identities. You are welcome drop in as and when you please, but to guarantee a place, booking is recommended (register with the form below).

In January, we will begin the process of stitching the panels together to create the final tapestry. To register interest in contributing to this process or put forward any ideas or queries regarding the project, please reach out to hello@hundredheroines.org.

We look forward to seeing what you create!
