Subversion 2024

While we were preparing to move into our permanent space, we had a selection of items on temporary display, representing both different aspects of the collection and project highlights.

From the Latin subvertere meaning ‘to overthrow’, subversion is a process by which the values and principles of a system in place are contradicted or reversed in an attempt to disrupt the established social order.  And this is exactly what these artists are doing … all the items in this display have been selected to highlight how women challenge the norms of photography, the art world and society.

Collection Highlights

A selection of objects from The Collection that reference some of our core themes, from a 1960s newspaper article about the domination of men in the portrait world to a collage from Helen Chadwick. We also have a vintage Wunderkammer filled with items and stories relating to the displays.

SCOBY Installation

The next chapter in the Feminist Project for Rural Arts, generously supported by The Ampersand Foundation.

Events

The start of our new events programme for the summer – plenty more in the pipeline, which will be added to the site once confirmed.

The Great Train Tapestry

The completed tapestry adorns the walls of our new space – and looks magnificent.  Thanks to all involved and to GWR and Canon for their generous support with the project.

Living Archive

The archive of Elisabeth Buchmeyer-Lewis (1935 – 2018). The digitisation and cataloguing is a work-in-progress, and we discover new items every day.
