Who can grow the biggest SCOBY?

The recent warm weather has spurted the growth of our SCOBY and we have lots of babies to give away.   For those who love the vibrant intersection of art and science, the SCOBYologist challenge beckons.  To make sure that there are are plenty for the harvest festival, we’re issuing a challenge to grow the largest SCOBY over the school holidays.

Grow your very own SCOBY (Symbiotic Culture Of Bacteria and Yeast) – a captivating, colourful slime with endless possibilities, from crafting leather-like fabric to adorning objects – and compete to grow the biggest by September. As well as seeing your SCOBY as part of the harvesting performance, we have some photo and art books to give away as prizes.

Free starter kits will be available from our stall at Nailsworth Market stall on July 27th (9:30 am – 2:00 pm). Your SCOBY will come in the growing solution that we’re using and will come with instructions.  After that, it’s down to you to experiment and see if you can grow the largest!  We’ll be judging them by weight, so you can grow a long and thin SCOBy or one that’s short and fat.  Our team will be on hand at the market to answer any questions.

Be inspired by Gloucestershire’s textile history and contribute your SCOBY  to a collaborative piece. All SCOBYologists will be invited to a special Autumn event to share their journey and artwork alongside renowned artist Monica C. LoCascio, who will harvest the “mother” SCOBY. Free. For all ages
