Marcia Michael
London-based photographer, Marcia Michael uses photography in conjunction with oral histories, video, and other artistic mediums, to explore the place of the black subject within the family album.
Marcia’s work often focuses on motherhood and matrilineage with two of her recent solo exhibitions, I Am Now You – Mother at Autograph and The Object of My Gaze at Museu da Imagem, exploring ideas of matrilineal tradition. Marcia draws from her own experiences in her art, with both exhibitions being informed by conversations between herself and her mother, and featuring her mother as a subject.
In 2020 Marcia was shortlisted for 198 Contemporary Arts and Learning’s Womxn of Colour Art Award, which works to overcome the inequities faced by women of colour in the visual arts.
Her 2020 series Before Memory Returns was most recently exhibited within Mythical Mother at Spilt Milk Gallery, London in Sept 2021.
