Mauerfall

Cover of Mauerfall 1989, by Barbara Klemm

Some of the most iconic images of the fall of the Berlin Wall were made by a female photojournalist – Barbara Klemm.  Many of them can be seen in her monograph Mauerfall 1989, available from Nimbus.

Steffi Klenz shows us a very different perspective of the wall, and one that is highly personal.  In He only feels the black and white of it, Berlin Wall, 14-07-1973, Steffi shows screen prints from a press image of part of the wall that was destroyed by West Germans.  The images become more disrupted as the effects of the repeated use damage the screen.  The images are combined with ‘equally fragmented reflective text’ that highlights her father’s loss of identity as a young man living in the GDR.
