Yto Barrada: Bite the Hand

Pace is pleased to announce a new exhibition by New York-based artist Yto Barrada, whose multidisciplinary practice spans textiles, sculpture, film, photography, and drawing. Titled Bite the Hand, this exhibition of recent work will be shown across all three rooms of the Hanover Square gallery.
The artist’s third solo show with Pace in the UK will include a suite of textile works, sculptures, prints, and the London premiere of a film installation. This exhibition also marks the first major display in London of Yto’s textile works, all of which were dyed at The Mothership, her Tangier-based natural dye garden, eco-feminist research centre and artist residency which opened to the public early this year.
Mónica Alcázar-Duarte: Digital Clouds Don’t Carry Rain

Affirming the value and survival of her ancestors’ indigenous knowledge, Mexican-British artist Mónica Alcázar-Duarte examines western society’s obsession with speed, expansion and resource accumulation at a time when ecological disaster looms. She raises critical questions – where does knowledge lie? Who and what is classified? – joining together the threads of dissociated knowledge systems.
The evocative photographs at the core of Digital Clouds Don’t Carry Rain are set among the dying trees of Derbyshire, home of the Industrial Revolution. In these self-portraits, the artist mimics poses from 18th-century Casta paintings, a genre of art made in Mexico during Spanish colonialism to illustrate racist social hierarchies – classifying people with a mixed ethnic background within a ‘caste’ system.
Acts of Resistance: Photography, Feminisms and the Art of Protest

Photography has long been associated with acts of resistance. It is used to document action, share ideas, inspire change, tell stories, gather evidence and fight against injustice. This group exhibition at the SLG, organised in collaboration with the V&A, spans the Main Gallery and the Fire Station, and brings together works by international artists and collectives who are using the camera to challenge and move beyond traditional protest photography.

Francesca Woodman and Julia Margaret Cameron: Portraits to Dream In

Photographers Francesca Woodman and Julia Margaret Cameron are two of the most influential women in the history of photography. They lived a century apart – Julia working in the UK and Sri Lanka from the 1860s, and Francesca in America and Italy from the 1970s. Both women explored portraiture beyond its ability to record appearance – using their own creativity and imagination to suggest notions of beauty, symbolism, transformation and storytelling.
Showcasing more than 160 rare vintage prints, Francesca Woodman and Julia Margaret Cameron: Portraits to Dream In spans the career of both artists – and suggests new ways to look at their work, and the way photographic portraiture was created in the 19th and 20th centuries.
The VERBUND COLLECTION: Twentieth Anniversary

Albertina presents an exhibition of works from VERBUND COLLECTION, Vienna, held in celebration of the collection’s twentieth anniversary. The corporate collection was founded by the leading Austrian electricity company VERBUND in 2004 and holds around one thousand works by two hundred artists. Covering themes such as the feminist avant-garde and the conceptual, poetic, and psychological perception of spaces, the show includes new acquisitions that will be presented in Austria for the first time.
