Marilyn was raised in Florida and attained a BFA from the University of Florida in 1970. In 1972, she received an MFA in Painting from Syracuse University.

Marilyn’s career began while she was still a student, via her creation of a black and white photography series about her mother, who struggled with drug addiction, under the mentorship of legendary photographer Diane Arbus.

Shortly after moving to New York in 1976, Marilyn began collaborating with German Expressionist painter Christof Kohlhofer. She gained widespread attention in the late 1980s and 1990s with her distorted paintings of pornographic scenes – ‘a series of decidedly Pop dot paintings […] embellished with pixelated streaks of paint that foreshadow[ed] her signature fluid aesthetic.’

Marilyn’s work has been the subject of numerous solo exhibitions and has been included in group exhibitions in museums all over the world, including the Kunsthaus Zürich, the Guggenheim Bilbao, and the Orange County Museum of Art.

A major retrospective of her work, titled Pretty/Dirty, was displayed in museums across the United States throughout 2015 – 2017.
