Filmmakers and Visual Artist
Marija Bozinovska Jones’s work forms complex ontologies surrounding the ethical mind-field of transactional data flow in a technocapitalist landscape, themes of the disembodied virtual persona, and conundrums of personal data politics. She uses intricate utopian worlds and self-representation through uncanny digital personas to reflect on autonomy in a tokenised system, where even our emotive lives and identities have become statistical goods.
In C22H37NO2 and EMO she grapples with agency on social media and the data driven act of constant measurement and comparative striving for fitness and health ideals. Commercial forms of care and self-care replace welfare state responsibilities in an ecosystem of self-propagating algorithmic wealth. In other works Marija uses her own avatar as an envoy to communicate her practice, a virtual stand-in for her presence in the digitised realm and a ‘personification of the politics of data flows’ (Bozinovska). With the aim of reclaiming self-knowledge in a relentlessly algorithmic world, she seeks to define the self in more personal terms.
Via affective computing, AI, machine learning, and data analytics, autopoietic spaces are set up where the human and the technological constantly shift and transform. Synthetic voices become digital fabric, composing artificial gestures that explore the limits of digitised human empathy and a data obsessed world.
