Exhibition by Fatma Bucak, Toronto, Canada
Acts of Erasure pairs the distinct art works of photographer Fatma Bucak and Krista Belle Stewart, who works in mixed-media installation.
The exhibition brings forth conversations about political identity concerning land and heritage, historical repression and interpretation, and the act and effects of erasure.
Fatma Bucak’s work explores these themes via her own life experiences of growing up in Eastern Turkey, creating within her a dual identity of Kurdish and Turkish. Her work within Acts of Erasure looks at the future of border spaces. Her series A Study in Eight Landscapes was made collaboratively with people living in or across borderlands. The series show the stark views of these transitional landscapes, such as those between the United States and Mexico, Turkey and Armenia, and Syria and Turkey.
Together with Krista Belle’s work, Fatma interrogates perceptions of cultural identity, and the notion of the nation-state. The resulting works present encounters with truths that are both revealing and unsettling.
