My name is Scarlett McNally, I am a 20 year old artist, born in Stroud. Currently studying BA Fine Art at Bath School of Art, Film and Media.
My artistic practice is multidisciplinary, spanning across sculpture and photography, each of these mediums follow a deeply tactile process. My process of making beings with collecting materials from my everyday environment, predominantly discarded objects. Inspiration for my sculptural works comes from marks on these objects left behind from the previous owner. My sculpture ‘Dress me up’ is an assemblage of two wooden elements from an easel which mirror one another. The colour scheme for this work was decided by the paint marks remaining from the previous owner. The three raw canvas forms function as a joiner to attach the wooden pieces together. I use the interactive process of darkroom developing to create photograms and pinhole images. My series of photograms used recycled materials combined with my own physical body, specially my hands. Slight hand adjustments expose light to different areas of photosensitive paper, to reveal negative space. I use reclaimed earthenware clay which has been discarded by neighbouring ceramics. Raw clay can be seen exposed between the glazed stripes, slight shade differences evidences the nature of using reclaimed discarded clay, resulting unique tones across the whole collection. Across these mediums my process is heavily guided by the material quality of the objects I select, I consider form over function.
