Princess Marianne – Obituary

By 12th May 2025No Comments

HSH Princess Marianne of Sayn-Wittgenstein-Sayn, known as ‘Manni’, who has died aged 105, made the most of her uniquely aristocratic and glamorous connections across Europe by photographing everyone from Maria Callas to Margaret Thatcher. She took up photography at the age of 10 and went to art school in Munich before the Second World War, and after the death of her husband Prince Ludwig in 1962 her professional career took off. She was often commissioned by Bunte magazine, published her first book of photographs at the age of 80 and was a prolific photographer at international motorsport events. She left an archive of around 300,000 photographs – an astonishing chronicle of what was once known as the ‘jet set’.
